Trump ‘won’t carry the burden’ of Ukraine’s security, it’s going to be…

US Vice President J.D. Vance signals a US policy shift, urging Europe to lead Kyiv’s security. Trump opposes blank checks for Ukraine, while Zelenskyy rejects land concessions to Russia. Read here…

Signalling a major shift in US policy towards the war in Ukraine, Vice President J.D. Vance has said that Europe will have to take the “lion’s share” of responsibility for guaranteeing Kyiv’s security against Russia.

“I don’t think we should carry the burden here…. The president certainly expects Europe to play the leading role,” Vance told Fox News, adding, “No matter what form this takes, the Europeans are going to have to take the lion’s share of the burden. It’s their continent, it’s their security, and the president has been very clear,   they are going to have to step up here.”

One of Ukraine’s key demands in any settlement is security guarantees to deter future Russian aggression. While Trump has ruled out deploying US troops on the ground, he has suggested Washington could offer limited air support. European countries, meanwhile, have formed what they call a “coalition of the willing” to commit forces to Kyiv’s defence.

Trump has been openly critical of the billions of dollars in US military aid already provided to Ukraine and has made clear Washington will not continue “writing blank checks” to fund Kyiv’s defence. Instead, he has sought to shift financial and military responsibilities onto European allies.

Vance also acknowledged the territorial stakes in the conflict, noting that Russia wants some of Ukraine’s land “most of which they have occupied but some of which they haven’t.” Russia currently controls around a fifth of Ukraine, and Trump has indicated that “land-swapping” and territorial adjustments will likely be central to any negotiated peace.

Ukraine, however, has strongly opposed ceding any land. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly said this stance is enshrined in the constitution. Yet with limited military capability to retake Russian-occupied areas and few diplomatic levers to force Moscow’s withdrawal, Kyiv faces an uphill struggle.

Amid these tensions, Senator Marco Rubio is set to meet European counterparts today to discuss advancing a peace process, though efforts so far have gained little traction.
