When the rains arrive, so do digestive troubles. Fluctuating temperatures, excess humidity, and a higher risk of infections often throw the gut microbiome off balance. Since a healthy gut is linked to stronger immunity, better mood, and overall wellness, what you eat during this season can make all the difference.

According to Ritika Samaddar, Dietitian and Regional Head, Max Healthcare, Delhi, “One of the best ways to strengthen immunity is by including nutrient-rich superfoods such as almonds, seasonal fruits like pomegranate and banana, and warm lentil soup in your diet.”

She emphasised that these foods not only aid digestion but also help the gut withstand seasonal stressors.

Almonds: The All-Season Gut Superfood

Almonds are more than just a handy snack. They are a powerful prebiotic. Studies show they support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, while also boosting butyrate production, a compound that strengthens the gut lining. Samaddar explained, “Almonds support gut health while also promoting cardiovascular well-being. Including them daily, whether as a snack or in meals, is a simple way to build resilience.”

Seasonal Fruits for Digestion and Immunity

The monsoon season brings an abundance of fruits that are rich in fibre, antioxidants, and water content, all of which aid digestion. Papayas, pears, and pomegranates are especially recommended. Seasonal fruits also have anti-inflammatory and immunity-boosting properties, protecting the body against infections that are common during humid weather.

Lentil Soup: Comfort Food with Benefits

A warm bowl of lentil soup not only comforts on a rainy evening but also fortifies gut health. Packed with fibre, protein, and essential micronutrients, lentils act as natural prebiotics that feed good bacteria. Samaddar said, “Lentils are perfect for monsoon meals as they combine gut-friendly fibre with nutrients like iron, magnesium, and folate.”

Curd: A Probiotic Powerhouse

Homemade curd or buttermilk is another staple that should feature in your monsoon diet. Rich in probiotics, curd improves digestion and balances gut flora. It also provides protein, calcium, and vitamin D. Pairing curd with rice or khichdi creates a soothing, balanced meal that supports immunity while being gentle on the stomach.
