Quote of the day by Vivek Ramaswamy: ‘Yes, I grew up in privilege. Not economic privilege, but the ultimate privilege of having two parents in the home’

Quote of the day by Vivek Ramaswamy: 'Yes, I grew up in privilege. Not economic privilege, but the ultimate privilege of having two parents in the home'

Quote of the day by Vivek Ramaswamy on family values and real privilege.

In 2024, Vivek Ramaswamy redefined privilege in his book TRUTHS: The Future of America First as he expanded the concept of privilege from economic affluence to emotional abundance. By the time the book was published, the billionaire entrepreneur had left the presidential race and endorsed Donald Trump. In this book, he spoke about his America First values, what he thinks on climate change agenda, open border, gender, family, reverse racism etc.”Yes, I grew up in privilege. Not economic privilege, but the ultimate privilege of having two parents in the home — a mother and a father—instilling in us a focus on education and a belief in God,” he wrote. The term “privilege” is almost exclusively tied to systemic advantages based on race, class, or socioeconomic status (often referred to under the umbrella of “white privilege” or “economic privilege”. As an Indian-origin kid, Ramaswamy did not have the privilege of not being bullied as he was growing up; even today, as he contests for Ohio Governor, he is facing racist attacks. He said his privilege was having two parents in the home. The quote shows his belief in the conservative family system.Ramaswamy was born in Ohio to Indian immigrant parents. His father worked as an engineer, while his mother was a geriatric psychiatrist. Although the family eventually became comfortably middle class, Ramaswamy emphasized that they were not born into inherited wealth or elite social circles. Rather, he attributed much of his later success to growing up in a household with two committed parents who consistently reinforced the importance of education, discipline, religion, and personal responsibility.Instead of denying that he was fortunate, he redefines what he considers genuine privilege. His point is that the greatest advantage he received was not money but a stable home with a mother and father who invested time and values in their children. This reflects one of the central themes running through Truths. Ramaswamy argued in his book that many of America’s deepest problems cannot be solved simply through economic redistribution or government programs because they stem from the weakening of institutions such as the family, religion, and local communities. In his view, children raised in stable homes generally benefit from consistent emotional support, clearer expectations, and stronger educational encouragement. Those advantages, he argued, often matter more over a lifetime than differences in family income.Education was a top priority in the Ramaswamy family and the GOP leader was exceptional in academics. Ramaswamy graduated summa cum laude in biology from Harvard and received his JD (Juris Doctor) from Yale Law School, while working at a hedge fund. He then started a biotech company, Roivant Sciences, where he oversaw the development of five drugs that went on to become FDA-approved. He has since founded numerous successful companies, including Strive and Chapter. The family values that he spoke about in his book were upheld by him too as he maintains his public image as a family person with. He is married to Dr Apoorva Ramaswamy, a throat surgeon in Columbus, Ohio, where they are raising their three kids — two sons and a daughter.
