World Sexual Health Day 2025: In this fast-paced world, health often takes a backseat. Unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles, chronic stress, and relentless work demands are all taking a serious toll on people’s physical and mental well-being. Unsurprisingly, health issues are on the rise across all age groups.

Yet, while conversations around many medical conditions have become more open, sexual health remains shrouded in stigma, particularly in Indian society. This silence not only delays treatment but also pushes many into the hands of unqualified quacks, risking further harm rather than healing.

World Sexual Health Day: Breaking The Silence

To raise awareness around these issues, World Sexual Health Day is observed every year on September 4. On this occasion, Dr Madhur Rathi, Consultant Psychiatrist at Yatharth Hospital, Noida, shared insights with News18.

Dr Rathi explained that widespread shame and hesitation surrounding sexual health are deeply rooted in societal norms. This lack of openness has allowed quacks and fake doctors to thrive, offering baseless treatments that are not only ineffective but potentially harmful. He stressed the importance of seeking help from qualified professionals.

Common Yet Treatable Conditions

Dr Rathi pointed out that concerns such as premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, low libido, performance anxiety, and pain during intercourse are quite common today, and all of them are treatable with proper medical care.

Depending on the nature of the problem, patients may benefit from seeing professionals such as psychologists, sexologists, andrologists, or gynaecologists, who can provide accurate diagnoses and effective treatments.

Why Sexual Health Matters

Sexual health plays a crucial role in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It is connected to a healthy body, hormonal balance, immunity, and even heart health. Dr Rathi noted that poor sexual health can lead to issues like stress, irritability, and strain in relationships.

He emphasised that sexual wellness is not only important for personal happiness, but also for maintaining emotional intimacy, mutual understanding, and relationship balance. A fulfilling sexual life can significantly strengthen the bond between partners.

Steps Towards Better Sexual Health

Health experts recommend the following for improving sexual health:

  • Balanced diet and regular physical activity
  • Reducing mental stress
  • Avoiding smoking, alcohol, and unsafe sexual practices
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular health check-ups
  • Seeking timely medical advice for any concerns

In addition, open communication between partners and understanding each other’s emotional and physical needs are key elements of a healthy sexual relationship.
