Shilpa Shetty Kundra shares with News18 about her collection ROAR in collaboration with Aza Fashions, why Deepika Padukone and Zendaya embody the spirit of the collection and what she felt when she first draped a saree.
How does your personal connection with sarees empower this collection?
Sarees have always been an integral part of my identity, symbolising elegance, strength, and femininity. With ROAR in collaboration with Aza Fashions, I was able to channel that personal bond into designs that empower the modern Indian woman with pieces that make her feel confident, graceful, and unstoppable.
When was the first time you draped a saree, and do you remember the experience you had?
I first draped a saree as a young girl, and it was magical – an instant sense of grace and pride. That feeling never left me and became the inspiration behind ROAR with Aza, an exclusive line that merges the timelessness of the saree with contemporary flair.
What does ROAR mean to you as a contemporary Indian woman?
ROAR represents confidence, fearlessness, and individuality. Through this collection, I wanted to show that the saree is more than just a piece of clothing; it’s a statement of power and self-expression for today’s woman.
Was there a moment in your journey where you felt the saree needed a contemporary reintroduction?
Absolutely. While the saree is timeless, it is often seen as ceremonial. I wanted to reintroduce it as a versatile, modern garment, equally perfect for festive occasions and everyday dressing with confidence.
As a celebrity, what inspired this collection and how involved were you in the design process?
My love for prints, textures, and bold colours was the driving force behind ROAR. I was deeply involved in every stage, from choosing fabrics and motifs to exploring new drapes, ensuring that each saree at Aza Fashions reflects the spirit of the contemporary woman.
The collection has 25 sarees reimagined through a modern lens. How have you balanced traditional craftsmanship and new-age styling in this collection?
We’ve kept traditional artistry alive through intricate weaves, hand embroidery, and detailed craftsmanship, while bringing in modernity with experimental drapes, bold cuts, and striking prints. With Aza’s expertise, we found the perfect balance between heritage and modern wearability.
As a woman who loves a saree, what was that one thing you introduced in this collection which felt you needed the most?
I wanted sarees that are effortlessly empowering—pieces that allow a woman to move freely, feel confident, and express herself. We brought this vision to life, blending comfort with elegance.
Pick an Indian and international star you would love to see wearing a saree from this collection.
I’d love to see Deepika Padukone and Zendaya draped in ROAR sarees. Both embody confidence, individuality, and style, perfect reflections of the collection’s spirit.
Your favourite picks from the collection that resonate with you and are perfect for the festive season.
Some of my top picks are the sarees featuring bold animal-inspired prints, vibrant colour palettes, and delicate embellishments. Each one is crafted with love and is perfect for festive celebrations, bringing together tradition with a confident, modern edge.
