One of the most stunning countries in Europe, Estonia, is offering a permanent residence permit to foreigners. Due to its vibrant startup culture and constant pursuit of digital innovation, Estonia has always been considered a great place for relocation and employment opportunities.

Now, the country’s permanent residence permit is also helping individuals attain indefinite residential allowance and earn their livelihood in Euros. For Indians planning to settle in Estonia, here is how they can live, work and achieve their professional and personal goals in the amiable ecosystem of the beautiful nation.

Estonia’s Five-Year Rule and Eligibility

While Estonia’s permanent residence permit is extremely enticing, Indians need to understand the necessary conditions to be eligible for it. For starters, a foreign citizen is required to spend a continuous five-year period in Estonia on a valid temporary residence permit before they can apply to live there permanently. Also, during this period, the concerned individual cannot exceed 12 months of absence from the EU and a cumulative 10 years away from Estonia.

Here are some of the other criteria to receive permanent residence in Estonia:

  • The applicant must have a registered place of residence recorded in the Estonian Population Register.
  • They must also meet the integration requirement, which involves demonstrating proficiency in the Estonian language up to at least B1 level.
  • The concerned individual must have health insurance from the Estonian Health Insurance Fund.
  • Applicants need to prove that they have a legal source of income that can cover their living expenses in Estonia.
  • Under the regulations, special provisions are applied to applicants who are aged below 15, or are former Estonian citizens, EU Blue Card holders, or persons settled in Estonia before 1 July 1990.

Step-by-Step Guide To Apply

  • Step 1: Applicant must acquire a temporary residence permit (TRP) and live in Estonia for five years continuously.
  • Step 2: Keep the required documents with them, including a completed application form, a valid passport, a stable income proof, documents ascertaining temporary residence permit for long-term residents, passport-size photographs, payment receipts for the application fee and some additional supporting documents based on individual circumstances.
  • Step 3: Submit all your documents along with the application form in person at the Estonian embassy.
  • Step 4: Pay the required application fee of €185 (approximately, Rs 19,323).
  • Step 5: Once approved, you will receive a permanent residence permit card from the authorities.
