According to Drik Panchang, the Dashmi Tithi begins at 7:01 PM on October 1, 2025, and will end at 7:10 PM on October 2, 2025. However, the Vijay Muhurat is from 2:27 PM to 3:15 PM on October 2.

Dussehra 2025: Rituals

The festival is marked by various rituals across the country, such as;

  1. Ram Leela Performances: It is a Hindu theatrical performance re-enacting the life of Lord Rama, the hero of the Ramayana epic. Performed over 10 days during the annual Navratri and Dussehra festivals, it portrays events from Rama’s life
  2. Effigy Burning: The main event of Dussehra involves the lighting of large effigies of Raavan, Meghnad and Kumbhkaran packed with fireworks that lit up the night sky
  3. Ayudha Pujan: In southern states, Vijayadashami Puja and Ayudha Puja are performed, where devotees worship weapons, tools, and vehicles as a mark of gratitude.
  4. Goddess Durga Visarjan: In West Bengal, the day is celebrated with the Durga idols taken for Visarjan in a river or a pond, which marks the end of Navratri celebrations.

Dussehra 2025: Significance

It has dual significance.

  1. The festival of Dussehra commemorates the day when Lord Rama fought the ten-headed demon king Ravana and rescued his wife, Sita. The event honours Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana’s adharma (unrighteousness). In several regions of India, huge effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhakarna are burned as a ritual to celebrate the occasion.
  2. In addition to this, Vijayadashami also commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. According to Hindu legend, Goddess Durga fought a long and fierce battle with Mahishasura for nine days and nights before defeating him on the tenth day, known as Vijayadashami. This victory symbolises the triumph of divine feminine power against evil.
