A devastating toxic liquor tragedy has shaken Maharashtra’s Pune region, where contaminated alcohol is suspected to have claimed at least 13 lives across multiple localities, including Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune city. Authorities reported that the deaths were spread across different areas, with eight fatalities in Pimpri-Chinchwad, three in Kale Padel, and two in the Hadapsar region. Preliminary investigations suggest that the illicit liquor was manufactured in the Urli Kanchan village near Pune, where spirits were allegedly mixed with harmful industrial substances. The adulterated alcohol was then distributed across nearby urban pockets, leading to a sudden spike in fatalities as victims began experiencing severe health complications after consumption. Police have arrested the main accused, identified as Yogesh Wankhede, who is believed to be linked to the production and distribution of the toxic liquor. During raids, officials also recovered containers suspected to have been used in the preparation and storage of the contaminated alcohol. Investigators are currently examining supply chains and identifying additional individuals involved in the illegal network. The worst-hit areas include Dapodi in Pimpri-Chinchwad and parts of Hadapsar and Kale Padel in Pune city. Local police stations have intensified monitoring as the death toll continues to rise, with officials not ruling out the possibility of further casualties as medical teams assess additional suspected cases. The incident has raised serious concerns over enforcement against illegal liquor manufacturing and distribution networks in the region. Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to determine lapses and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
