STATE ALERT: Kota Underpass Soil Collapse Kills Two Engineers, Probe Ordered Into Negligence

A tragic accident in Rajasthan’s Kota district claimed the lives of two engineers after soil caved in during the construction of a railway underpass. The incident occurred at a busy construction site where box-pushing work was underway to build an underpass aimed at easing frequent traffic congestion on the Kota–Jhalawar route. According to officials and on-ground reports, engineers Prabhat Singh Jha and Pankaj Kumar Jha were supervising the construction work when a large mound of excavated soil suddenly collapsed. The soil, which had been stacked near the site, reportedly gave way and buried both engineers under its weight. Rescue teams used cranes and heavy machinery to retrieve them from the debris before rushing them to a nearby hospital, where both were declared dead during treatment. Preliminary accounts suggest that the soil removed during excavation had been improperly stacked, forming an unstable heap that later collapsed. Locals and officials have raised concerns over safety standards and supervision at the site, alleging lapses in construction protocol and risk assessment. The underpass project was intended to reduce long-standing traffic jams in the region, which often stretch for several kilometers. However, the fatal incident has now brought the project under scrutiny, with questions being raised about engineering oversight and adherence to safety norms. Authorities have ordered a detailed investigation into the accident to determine the exact cause and whether negligence played a role. Officials have also assured strict action against those found responsible. The tragedy has sparked grief among families of the deceased and renewed debate over worker safety at large infrastructure projects.
