Breaking: Bihar, Assam Withdraw NEET Protest Cases; Fresh Questions Raised Over Police Action

The governments of Bihar and Assam have initiated the process of withdrawing criminal cases filed against protesters who participated in demonstrations over the alleged NEET paper leak controversy. The decision comes after widespread criticism of police action during protests held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and several locations across the country, where clashes, detentions, and the use of force drew significant public attention. According to notifications issued by the Bihar Home Department, all FIRs registered against protesters up to 6:00 PM on July 26 will be withdrawn immediately. Authorities have also directed the release of those detained during the demonstrations and assured that no direct or indirect legal action will be taken against participants in the future. Assam has announced a similar move, confirming that all five cases registered against protesters will be withdrawn and that all 13 arrested individuals will be released. The development follows pressure from protest groups, which had warned of renewed demonstrations if legal cases were not revoked. Representatives involved in discussions with the administration reportedly received official communication confirming the government’s decision and discussed encouraging other states to adopt similar measures. Despite the withdrawal of cases, political debate continues. Opposition leaders have welcomed the release of protesters but demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the police firing and the chain of command behind the use of force. Meanwhile, the ruling alliance has defended the police, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the incident are already under investigation and that law enforcement personnel faced challenging conditions during the protests.
