The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a groundbreaking $1 billion initiative, ‘AI for Development,’ aimed at harnessing artificial intelligence to drive economic, social, and infrastructural growth in African nations. The program underscores the UAE’s commitment to innovative, technology-driven international development and global cooperation.

A strategic push for AI driven development in Africa

The ‘AI for Development’ initiative is designed to strengthen economic and social development across Africa by:

  • Developing digital infrastructure.
  • Enhancing government services.
  • Increasing productivity across key sectors.

The announcement was made by H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, during his speech at the G20 summit, where he reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to sustainable growth through international partnerships and innovative financing solutions tailored for emerging economies.Implementation of the initiative will be led by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, in collaboration with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency. This partnership reflects the UAE’s strategic role in enabling developing nations to leverage advanced AI technologies to tackle critical developmental challenges.

Integrating AI across essential sectors

The initiative targets the application of AI technologies in vital sectors to accelerate growth and create innovative solutions that expand opportunities for sustainable development. Key focus areas include:

  • Education: AI solutions to improve access, learning quality, and administrative efficiency.
  • Agriculture: Technologies to enhance productivity, optimize resources, and ensure food security.
  • Infrastructure: Smart systems for planning, construction, and management to support long-term development.

By integrating AI across these sectors, the initiative aims to help African countries overcome structural challenges while creating inclusive economic opportunities.

UAE’s vision and global commitment

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and Chairman of the Exports Executive Committee of ADEX, emphasized:“ADEX’s leadership of the AI for Development initiative reflects the UAE’s belief that artificial intelligence is a real force for advancing equitable growth and sustainable development. By combining technology, financing and partnerships, we aim to support developing countries in overcoming developmental challenges and building long-term economic resilience.”He added that UAE enterprises will be empowered to implement high-impact development projects, enhancing economic and technological cooperation with African nations and supporting global sustainable development goals.Al Suwaidi also noted that the initiative draws on the humanitarian and developmental legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, aligns with the vision of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and reflects the commitment of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to improving lives globally.

Strengthening humanitarian and development efforts

Dr Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Foreign Aid Agency, reinforced the UAE’s longstanding role in supporting communities worldwide. He highlighted that the AI for Development initiative:

  • Demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to global solidarity and cooperative development.
  • Focuses on improving living standards in regions facing developmental challenges, particularly across education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
  • Leverages the UAE’s emerging status as a global AI hub, recognized internationally for its technological and digital advancements.

The initiative is dedicated to African nations and complements the UAE’s broader foreign assistance to the continent. Since 1971, the UAE has provided over AED152 billion in aid to African countries, reflecting its long-standing commitment to supporting development and modernization across the region.

A global hub for AI and sustainable development

The launch of the $1 billion initiative cements the UAE’s position as a global leader in AI and technological innovation. Through this program, the country aims to:

  • Promote inclusive growth and sustainable development.
  • Deliver AI-driven solutions to address complex challenges in emerging economies.
  • Support regional and international modernization through cutting-edge technologies and smart systems.

By combining technology, finance, and international partnerships, the UAE’s AI for Development initiative represents a landmark effort to foster long-term growth, strengthen global cooperation, and enhance development outcomes across Africa and beyond. Go to Source
