'Pride of our nation': PM Modi hails Mumbaikars after BJP wins big in BMC polls; vows 'ease of living'

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday lauded the people of Mumbai following the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance’s strong showing in Maharashtra’s civic elections. Praising both the victory and the city’s spirit, he wrote on X, “Mumbai is the pride of our nation. It is the city of aspiration. It is a city that drives our growth. I am extremely grateful to my sisters and brothers of Mumbai for blessing the NDA. Mumbai personifies the best of Maharashtra’s vibrant culture. Inspired by this great ethos, we will deliver good governance and ‘Ease of Living’ to the people of the city.”

The Maharashtra State Election Commission declared results for 2,784 of the 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations late Friday evening, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party by winning 1,372 seats. Union home minister Amit Shah also lauded the alliance, writing, “The resounding victory of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in Maharashtra’s municipal elections shows that people across the country continue to trust the development policies of the NDA government led by Prime Minister Modi.”Shah extended his congratulations to CM Devendra Fadnavis, deputy CM Eknath Shinde, BJP state president Ravindra Chavan, and all party workers who contributed to the win. The Mahayuti coalition secured major wins across several municipal corporations, including Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, Dhule, Panvel, Jalgaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, and Jalna, while also edging toward a majority in the ongoing BMC vote count. TThe elections, held on January 15 after a gap of several years, covered 29 municipal corporations, nine of which fall in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, India’s most urbanised belt.
