‘Why is Amit Shah scared?’ Rahul Gandhi on ‘brutal’ violence against student protesters

'Why is Amit Shah scared?' Rahul Gandhi on 'brutal' violence against student protesters

NEW DLEHI: Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday intensified his attack on Union home minister Amit Shah, alleging that his absence from Parliament “reeks of guilt.”In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi questioned why Amit Shah had not yet addressed Parliament over the alleged “police action” against student protesters.”Why is Amit Shah so scared of coming to Parliament and explaining the brutal violence against students? It reeks of guilt,” Rahul wrote on X.The remarks came hours after the Congress leader demanded an independent Supreme Court-monitored high-powered committee to investigate the alleged “police brutalities” during the July 20 student protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. In an earlier post on X, Rahul said, “Students deserve justice. An independent SC monitored high powered committee must be constituted to probe brutalities against our students.”He also shared a video purportedly showing police action against protesters. The footage appeared to show police personnel lathi-charging demonstrators, while another clip showed a man in alleged civilian clothes forcefully throwing a student protester carrying the Indian flag onto the road. Rahul had first made the allegations during Wednesday’s Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.Addressing the House, he questioned Shah’s absence and accused him of being responsible for the alleged police action against students.”I am very happy today to see that the so-called home minister of this country does not have the courage to come and sit here… Why is the home minister not here today? The home minister is not here today because he is scared,” Rahul said.He further alleged, “The home minister authorised the shooting on our students. He put pellets into the blood of our students. He ordered the students of India to be shot.”Several of Rahul’s remarks were later expunged from the Lok Sabha proceedings by the Speaker. However, the Congress leader repeated the allegations outside Parliament and demanded Shah’s removal along with a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the alleged police action.

Later, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) also sought answers from Shah over the July 20 police action, citing Rahul’s allegations in Parliament.CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das said, “This raises serious concerns about the Home Minister’s role in July 20 Police Brutality case. He must be held accountable. Every life is precious. A student lost his vision for life at the Home Minister’s order! Answer now.”The latest exchange came as opposition MPs staged a protest at Makar Dwar in the Parliament complex over the alleged police action against student protesters and the alleged embezzlement of donations made at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.Leaders from several INDIA bloc parties gathered with placards questioning who ordered the alleged police action at Jantar Mantar and raised slogans demanding accountability from the Centre.
