He garnered 56305 votes, while Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate M.Sugumar came second with 46524 votes.The AIADMK has fielded Thanga Kathiravan from Nagapattinam, setting up a contest against TVK candidate N. Sugumar, and M.H.Jawahirullah of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026.Nagapattinam is a coastal constituency and the district headquarters. It has a strong history of supporting left-leaning and Dravidian parties.In the 2021 Assembly elections, VCK’s J. Mohamed Shanavas won the seat with 66,281 votes, defeating AIADMK’s Thanga Kathiravan, who secured 59,043 votes.
