Veteran playback singer Suresh Wadkar has revisited an intriguing and long-rumoured chapter from his life, involving actress Madhuri Dixit. Speaking at the Sahitya Aaj Tak 2025 stage, Wadkar candidly opened up about reports claiming that Madhuri’s family had once approached him with a marriage proposal during the early phase of her career.
‘Madhuri ke parivaar se shaadi ka rishta aaya tha’
Recalling the moment, Suresh Wadkar revealed that Madhuri Dixit’s parents had come to him with the idea of marriage when she was just starting out in films. When Wadkar was told that there’s a story behind the film Parinda and how Madhuri Dixit’s family came to him with a marriage proposal. They said Wadkar should marry Madhuri and settle down. Responding to this, Wadkar said, “Ye wala programme Madhuri bhi dekhenge. Woh mujhe kisi din saamne se milengi toh itna peetengi.” (Madhuri will also watch this programme. If she ever meets me face to face, she might beat me up for saying this.)
‘Woh patang aaj bhi hawa mein latki hui hai’
Speaking about how the proposal never reached a conclusion, Wadkar added, “Ab kya hua hoga woh Bhagwan jaane, lekin ye patang kisne udaai woh pata nahi. Sach kahoon toh woh patang abhi tak hawa mein hi latki hui hai. Agar Madhuri ki shaadi mere saath hoti toh kya woh aaj ke time mein mere saath nahi hoti kya?” (Only God knows what really happened, but I don’t know who flew that kite. Honestly, that kite is still hanging in the air. If Madhuri had married me, wouldn’t she still be with me today?)
Why the proposal didn’t materialise
As per reports over the years, Madhuri Dixit’s parents were keen that she settle down rather than fully commit to a film career at the time. They reportedly reached out to Suresh Wadkar’s family, but the singer declined the proposal, allegedly citing that Madhuri was “dubli-patli” (very slender). Madhuri Dixit later married Dr Shriram Nene in 1999, choosing a life partner outside the film industry.
