Sunny Deol’s ‘Lahore 1947’ renamed ‘Batwara 1947’

Sunny Deol’s 'Lahore 1947' renamed 'Batwara 1947' to avoid political sensitivities ahead of Independence Day release - Report

Rajkumar Santoshi’s Aamir Khan-produced Lahore 1947, starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, is now Batwara 1947 due to India-Pak frictions. Based on a Partition play about Mai in Lahore, rights passed from Govind Nihalani to Santoshi. Eyes Independence Day release.

The much-awaited Rajkumar Santoshi’s film ‘Lahore 1947’ is undergoing a title change. The filmmakers worry that including “Lahore” could lead to trouble amid the current strains between India and Pakistan. The decision, reportedly finalized last week, comes as the production team seeks a title that captures the broader human tragedy of the Partition rather than focusing on a specific geographic location that might trigger geopolitical sensitivities.

‘Batwara 1947’ title switch

According to Vickey Lalwani, ‘Lahore 1947’ has been retitled ‘Batwara 1947’. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film is set during India’s 1947 partition and stars Aamir alongside Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh. It’s based on Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.

‘Batwara 1947’ story background

The film is set during the tough times of India’s 1947 Partition. It centers on Mai, an old Hindu woman who stays in Lahore after the divide, showing the deep feelings and complications of that period. Veteran director Govind Nihalani first bought the film rights. But when Santoshi found this strong story, he wanted to make it into a movie.Reportedly, Santoshi always pictured Sunny Deol in the lead for this film. After over a decade of waiting, he teamed up with the producer Aamir Khan, who backed the Santoshi-Sunny pairing. Before his own directorial debut, Santoshi collaborated closely with Nihalani on ‘Vijeta’ (1982), ‘Ardh Satya’ (1983), ‘Party’ (1984), and ‘Aghaat’ (1985).The film’s music is scored by the legendary A.R. Rahman, with lyrics penned by the renowned Javed Akhtar. This collaboration marks a significant reunion for the duo, who previously captured the essence of the Partition era in the 1998 classic ‘1947 Earth.’ It is a powerful reunion for Rajkumar Santoshi, who is once again teaming up with Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan, his long-time collaborators on some of Bollywood’s most enduring hits.
