Ratna recalls Satish Shah’s wife’s heartbreaking words

Ratna Pathak Shah recalls Satish Shah's wife Madhu Shah's heartbreaking words at his funeral, 'Madhu seemed stunned... her hands stiff'

Veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah has written a heartfelt obituary for her dear friend and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai co-star Satish Shah, who passed away on October 25 due to cardiac arrest. In her moving tribute, Ratna shared memories of Satish, their decades-long friendship, and her poignant interaction with his wife Madhu Shah at the funeral.

“Is this really happening?” — Madhu’s heartbreaking words

Recalling the moment Satish’s friends and family gathered for his final rites, Ratna wrote in The Indian Express that his “mobile face was completely still,” and she wasn’t sure if he looked peaceful. When everyone turned to Madhu, Satish’s wife of 45 years, Ratna said she seemed frozen in disbelief. In her obituary, Ratna shared, “‘Is this really happening?’ she asked me, her eyes stunned, her hands stiff. As he was led away, we gathered around her and tried to make sense of the events.”

“He wanted to live for her”

Ratna reflected on the deep love Satish had for Madhu, writing that he “wanted to live for her — to see her through her troubled times.” She recalled how Satish often sang beautifully for his wife, and wondered, “Who will sing to her and with her now?”

Madhu’s strength in song

The actor further wrote that Madhu eventually joined those gathered in celebrating Satish’s life. Ratna shared, “Madhu was able to join in — she sang softly and tentatively at first, as if surprised that the man associated with these songs wasn’t present. But then she just gave in to the warmth of the loved ones who came together to celebrate his life, while marking his passage to another stage. Her voice rose, and she seemed to be singing to her Satish.”

A farewell to a beloved artist

Satish Shah, aged 74, passed away in Mumbai on October 25. While early reports suggested kidney failure as the cause of death, his Sarabhai vs Sarabhai co-star Rajesh Kumar later clarified that it was cardiac arrest. According to reports, Satish collapsed at home during lunch and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors’ attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Go to Source
