Rana-Dulquer on shift debate: ‘Going extra on a day is cheaper’

Rana Daggubati and Dulquer Salmaan react to 8-hour shift debate: 'Going extra on a day is cheaper than an additional day'

Rana Daggubati and Dulquer Salmaan have shared their thoughts on the growing industry debate around Deepika Padukone’s stance on implementing an eight-hour work shift in the film industry. In a recent conversation, the two actor-producers shared their honest take on the subject and why they felt that set working hours was “not possible in cinema.”

Rana on 8-hour shifts in the film industry

Joined by filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane and producer Archana Kalpathi, the actors offered their view in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India. Daggubati stressed upong the unpredictable nature of the craft saying, “This is not a job; it’s a lifestyle. Each film will ask for something else. It’s not a factory. We could sit for eight hours and the best scene comes out, or sit for fifty and nothing comes out.”

Dulquer claims crew members prefer working more

Dulquer Salmaan, who recently produced the Malayalam hit ‘Lokah: Chapter 1’, shared the sentiment. Speaking about the work culture in the Malayalam film industry, he shared, “you just keep going.” He went on to add that “nobody knows when it’s going to end,” and claimed that the crew members are often the ones willing to work extra. He said, “If I want to give them an off, they’re like, ‘No, let’s just finish and go home.'”

Cost factor on film sets

While addressing the financial strain adding days can cost a production, he said, “Going extra on a day is cheaper than an additional day.” Producer Archana Kalpathi also weighed in and shared why a shift structures are difficult to implement in the industry. Noting that, “Everyone has to make money,” she went on to share, “A nine-to-five is not possible in cinema, because we have all signed on into this crazy world of sunrise call sheet, sunset call sheet. It’s a collaborative effort, but we should not waste anybody’s time.”She added that while smaller films can avoid holiday shoots to control costs, she said large productions, “your interest cost is so high that you need to finish it.”

Vikramaditya on importance of not exploiting workers

Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane added that while long hours are sometimes unavoidable, “What I don’t like is feeling exploited or exploiting the crew.” He went on to state that for as long as everyone knows their schedule in advance, they can prepared for it. Go to Source
