‘Sometimes I want to quit’: Ruben Amorim addresses Manchester United future after shock Grimsby defeat

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim opened up on his future after the shock Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town on Thursday. The Portuguese boss has suffered a poor start to the 2025-26 Premier League season and now his team has been knocked out of the cup.

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has opened up on his future after the recent defeat to Grimsby Town on penalties. Amorim expressed doubt about his stay at United, but also said that he expects to continue in his job for now.

United lost to the League Two side on penalties in the Carabao Cup second round on Thursday, August 28. After the game, Ruben Amorim made a comment that sparked speculation about his potential departure as United’s manager.

Speaking to reporters, Amorim admitted that his emotions sometimes take control and claimed “something has to change.” He further added, “Sometimes I want to quit, and sometimes I want to stay at Man United for the next 20 years.”.

When asked if he was sure about being in charge after the international break, the 40-year-old replied, “I don’t know what is going to happen, that is my idea. I am not going to promise you nothing. I am the manager of Manchester United and I think that is not going to change.”

It has once again been a poor start for United, who are 16th in the 2025-26 Premier League points table after two matches and are already out of the Carabao Cup. They have played two games so far, drawing one against Fulham and losing the other to Arsenal.

However, Amorim still believes he can turn things around and bring back United in contention for the Premier League title. “Yes, it depends on the day! I am confident as I saw them play really well in tough matches and I see it in training, training is so much better. I was shocked [at Grimsby],” he said.

United have picked up only 28 points from 29 league games under Amorim. They are slated to face Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday, August 30. The Portuguese has promised to respond strongly in their upcoming game.

“Last game, we had moments where I had the feeling that when it is tough, everyone does their own thing. We have to change that feeling. We have to work on that, to work on that is the next game. We can respond on Saturday,” he said.
