Days after a stampede at TVK founder Vijay’s political rally in Karur claimed the lives of 41 people, posters supporting the actor were seen in some cities of Tamil Nadu.

“Save the Commander. We will restore Tamil Nadu,” one of the posters displayed on a locked grill gate in Viluppuram read.

Some posters also read, “We stand with you, Thalapathi Vijay”.

The actor’s posters were also seen in Thanjavur, which were reportedly put up by TVK’s labour wing leaders.

Earlier, posters condemning Vijay, showing him with bloodstained hands, were put up in Karur by the Tamil Nadu Students’ Association.

The stampede on September 27 killed 41 people and injured over 60.

Following the incident, Vijay, in his video message on September 30, said the government may do “anything to him” for the stampede but should spare his party men.

SIT FORMED TO PROBE KARUR STAMPEDE

In the latest, the Madras High Court on Friday formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Karur stampede incident.

Chief Minister MK Stalin and the ruling DMK trained their guns against the BJP and Vijay, respectively.

While Stalin accused the BJP of trying to gain political mileage over the deadly incident, his party DMK slammed Vijay for his alleged “arrogance, hunger for money, publicity mania and the desire for chair.”

It said his challenge to the state government to arrest him for the stampede was aimed at diverting attention away from the deaths of as many as 41 persons.

The HC formed the SIT under a senior IPS officer and Inspector General, North Zone, Asra Garg, to probe the matter. It also criticised the TVK organisers of the event, the party leadership and the police over the stampede, which killed children, among others.

Meanwhile, the Madurai bench dismissed the anticipatory bail pleas of TVK state general secretary Bussy N Anand and deputy general secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar, who were also named in the FIR in connection with the incident.

The TVK functionaries, besides a local leader of the party who has since been arrested, were booked under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 125 (endangering life of others), and 223 (disobedience to order), of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
