The new signboards with new street names in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore were removed with new street names in a Muslim-dominated area following a BJP leader’s complaint that they were linked to a “particular religion”, officials said.

Mayoir Pushyamitra Bhargav on Thursday said that legal action would be taken against the ward councillor for allegedly renaming the roads illegally.

Akash Vijayvargiya, former BJP MLA and son of Madhya Pradesh Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, wrote a letter to IMC commissioner Shivam Verma, saying that some streets in Chandan Nagar were renamed based on one religion.

He alleged that civic staff had put up signboards with “changed names” and warned of a protest if they weren’t removed right away. Mayor Bhargav added that ward councillor Fatma Rafiq Khan had “illegally” renamed five streets in Ward No. 2 of Chandan Nagar and got the boards installed with the help of corporation employees.

The boards were removed and an order for legal action against the councillor has been given, Bhargav said.

Councillor Fatma Rafiq Khan’s husband, Rafiq Khan, rejected the allegation. He said that two years ago they had only asked the corporation to put up signboards in the crowded area for people’s convenience. According to him, the civic body had installed boards with names that had been used for nearly 40 years. He added that while they did not oppose removing the disputed boards, they would meet with the mayor to explain their side.

One of the removed boards showed the same street as both ‘Sakina Manzil Road’ and ‘Chandan Nagar Sector-B Ward No. 2’, while another was labelled as both ‘Raza Gate’ and ‘Loha Gate Road’.

Local resident Abdul Wahid Khan said one of the boards showed both ‘Gausia Road’ and ‘Chandu Wala Road’ because people commonly used both names. He added that removing such boards would naturally make it harder to find addresses.
