A 12-year-old boy died in a lift accident at Ram Smriti Society in Choviswadi, Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune, on Friday evening. The incident occurred when the lift, stuck between the third and fourth floors, failed to open, leaving the child trapped.

According to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s fire department, they received an emergency call about the child being trapped in the lift. Firefighters rushed to the spot and managed to pull him out using cutters. He was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared him dead before arrival.

How the accident happened

The building’s four-storey lift was an old model with iron-grilled doors. The boy was travelling upwards when, while playing, his leg slipped out through the grill. This caused the lift to halt between two floors. Losing balance, he panicked and began shouting for help.

Neighbours heard his cries and quickly informed his parents. Locals attempted to free the boy but failed, after which the fire brigade was called. Despite their efforts, valuable time was lost, and the child could not be saved.

Authorities are expected to investigate the matter further to determine whether negligence in lift maintenance contributed to the tragedy.
