Torch sales surge in Bahraich, boosting shopkeepers’ earnings.

Markets across the Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district are witnessing an unexpected surge in torch sales, with shopkeepers reporting long queues for devices that went largely unnoticed just days ago. The rising demand has also brought torch repairers into the spotlight, as residents rush to replace batteries, lights, and switches, boosting their daily earnings.

This sudden spike in demand is being attributed to a series of thefts reported in villages, neighbourhoods, and city areas over the past several days. As darkness falls, residents are taking extra precautions with some patrolling streets with sticks, while others climb rooftops, scanning the skies for suspicious activity. Traditional mobile flashlights and household lighting, they say, do not match the reach and intensity of dedicated torches, making them essential tools for night-time vigilance.

Notably, women are increasingly joining the torch-buying trend. Many have expressed the need to stay alert about personal safety during night hours. In case of unusual noises or disturbances, torches allow them to monitor surroundings effectively. Rechargeable models have proven particularly useful during frequent power cuts, ensuring uninterrupted light.

In Bahraich’s Bisatkhana Market and other commercial hubs, thousands of torches are being sold daily. Long-range lights, rechargeable units, and models with extended battery life are emerging as the most popular choices. Shopkeepers estimate that torch sales have tripled over the past week, reflecting a growing sense of caution among residents.
