Pune-based content creator Atharva Sudame deleted a reel on social harmony ahead of Ganeshotsav after it sparked a backlash on social media. The influencer, who has 1.7 million Instagram followers, apologised saying that he did not want to hurt religious sentiments.

In the video, which has since been deleted, Atharva Sudame appeared as a devotee seeking to buy a Ganesh idol. The seller quoted a price but just as the deal was about to be made, a young boy wearing a skullcap handed lunch to the idol maker. After an awkward silence, the idol maker told Atharva Sudame that there were “other shops down the street” if he wished to buy elsewhere.

To this, Atharva Sudame replied, “My father tells me, you should be the sugar which sweetens kheer and sheer kurma; you should be the brick which builds a temple or a mosque.” The idol maker responded that his own father also made idols “with pure feelings in his heart.”

The reel evoked divided reactions on social media as some users praised the message while others criticised him for venturing into religious issues. A Facebook post read, “Atharva Sudame has created filth, and he will have to face consequences for his entire life. I have never liked this over-rated social media influencer. Now, he has introduced Pune in a wrong way through his reel.”

Atharva Sudame Apologises For Reel

Following the row, Atharva Sudame posted an apology video, saying, “Yesterday, I uploaded a video on my social media platforms, which I have now deleted. Many people were upset and did not like it. I want to make it clear that my intention was never to hurt anyone or their beliefs. So far, I have made many videos based on Hindu festivals, Marathi culture, and our language.”

“I don’t think any other influencer has made as many videos as I have on our festivals and culture. I truly had no intention of offending anyone. But if people still feel hurt, I apologise,” he added.
