Indian Navy To Commission Second Anti-Submarine Vessel INS Androth In Visakhapatnam Today

The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Androth, the second ship in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series, at a ceremonial event on Monday, 6 October, at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. The event will be presided over by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command. The commissioning marks another step in the Navy’s ongoing efforts to boost its operational readiness and maritime self-reliance.

What do we know about INS Androth?

Recommended Stories

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, INS Androth is a proud representation of India’s rapidly advancing shipbuilding capabilities. The vessel boasts over 80 per cent indigenous content, demonstrating the Navy’s sustained focus on self-reliance under the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.

The ship’s design and construction involved collaboration with Indian industries and technology firms, ensuring that key systems and components are developed domestically. This not only strengthens India’s defence industrial base but also reduces dependence on foreign suppliers in critical maritime technologies.

How will deployment of INS Androth benefit the Indian Navy?

The commissioning of Androth will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capacity, particularly in shallow and littoral waters. These specialised vessels are designed for detecting and neutralising underwater threats, safeguarding India’s coastline, and ensuring the security of vital maritime trade routes.

Equipped with advanced sonar systems, modern weapon suites, and improved endurance for extended deployments, INS Androth represents a vital addition to the Navy’s fleet. It complements larger surface combatants and submarines by extending the Navy’s surveillance and strike reach in coastal areas.

The induction of Androth follows a series of recent additions to the Navy’s fleet, including INS Arnala, INS Nistar, INS Udaygiri, and INS Nilgiri.
