Every October and November, India’s Diwali season transforms shopping into a national sport. Online and offline, it’s the single largest sales window of the year.

In 2024, the Diwali period generated an estimated Rs 90,000 crore in e-commerce sales, and industry trackers expect 2025 to outpace that despite a shaky global economy.

Quiet but Massive Hiring Drive

Weeks before the first “Big Billion” or “Great Indian” sale banners drop, major players like Flipkart, Amazon, Meesho, and Reliance Retail quietly start recruiting armies of temporary staff.

These hires fill warehouses, pack boxes, deliver parcels, and handle customer calls. Industry insiders peg this year’s festive hiring at more than 350,000 contract positions across India, roughly 15–20 percent higher than 2024.

A recent survey by the All India Warehousing Association shows that from August to mid-October, e-commerce companies increase warehouse staffing by as much as 40 percent. Delivery networks see a similar surge. Average contract durations are 60–90 days, matching the run-up to Diwali and the extended return window that follows.

Wages and Incentives: The Lure and the Reality

  • Pay Rates: Warehouse and delivery associates typically earn Rs 18,000–22,000 a month during the festive period, plus overtime and incentives for high-volume shifts.
  • Bonuses: Some companies add per-parcel incentives of Rs 5–7 or offer one-time Diwali bonuses for those who stay the full contract.
  • Hidden Costs: Workers often pay for travel to metro hubs and temporary lodging, which can eat into these festive gains.

Interviews with gig workers paint a picture of grueling 10–12 hour shifts, heavy lifting, and strict performance tracking. Delivery partners race to hit 100–120 drops per day in congested city traffic. High turnover is common; companies rely on staffing agencies to keep supply steady.

The Flip Side of Flexibility

Short-term contracts mean no paid leave, no provident fund contributions, and limited health coverage. Many workers move from one seasonal gig to another. Festive e-commerce in the autumn, agriculture during harvest, or tourism in winter, without long-term security.

A growing trend is the targeted hiring of women for packaging and quality control roles. Companies report that women now make up nearly 20 percent of warehouse staff during festive peaks, drawn by daytime shifts and slightly safer work environments.

Tech-Driven Efficiency

AI-based inventory management and last-mile routing help predict demand surges, but they also tighten productivity metrics. Workers describe real-time scanning systems that flag slow packers or delayed deliveries, adding pressure to already long shifts.

The Diwali hiring rush reflects India’s changing labour landscape: millions of workers cycling through short contracts to feed the country’s appetite for flash sales and one-day deliveries. For e-commerce giants, it’s a cost-efficient model. For workers, it’s a lifeline and a reminder of how precarious India’s gig economy can be.

What to Watch Next

Labour unions and policy analysts are pressing for better social security nets for gig and contract workers. The upcoming Labour Codes, if enforced, could mandate basic benefits even for short-term hires. How the big e-commerce firms adapt will shape the future of festive hiring in India.
