Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar Ram, a key Dalit leader in the state, became emotional on Tuesday while reacting to the attempted attack on Chief Justice of India BR Gavai.

Addressing reporters, Ram alleged that the incident reflected the ideology of the RSS and highlighted ongoing challenges faced by Dalits.

“Even after reaching the highest constitutional offices, Dalits are still not fully accepted,” Ram said, visibly distressed.

“This incident reflects the RSS mindset. The BJP seems intent on replacing the Constitution, which safeguards Dalit rights, with the Manusmriti,” he added, pointing to alleged discrimination against Dalits.

The courtroom incident occurred on Monday when lawyer Rakesh Kishore attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai during proceedings in Court No. 1 of the Supreme Court.

The Chief Justice, however, remained calm, instructing court staff to ignore the incident and letting the lawyer go with a warning.

Ram, contesting for a third consecutive term from the Kutumba assembly seat, also criticised the NDA governments at the Centre and in Bihar for what he described as tokenistic welfare measures for women ahead of elections.

Speaking at the press meet, Jharkhand minister Dipika Pandey Singh questioned the government’s claims of promoting women’s financial empowerment.

“The Prime Minister has provided only Rs 10,000 for women in Bihar,” she said.

“If the Mahagathbandhan comes to power, we will ensure Rs 30,000 per year along with ownership of small plots of land for women,” Singh added.

She cited Jharkhand as an example, where the state government provides Rs 30,000 annually to women without linking it to election cycles. Singh further alleged that over 60 per cent of Bihar’s population lives in poverty under the NDA government, with women being disproportionately affected.

“The state’s education, health, and safety conditions are dire. If the Prime Minister and Nitish Kumar are serious about women’s welfare, they must outline a concrete plan,” she said.
