The Congress party has once again sparked controversy with sharp criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this time drawing on the symbolism of Dussehra. Delhi Congress leader Udit Raj likened the Prime Minister to a “modern Ravana,” warning that the “golden palace” Modi is building will eventually face destruction.

Speaking to the media, Udit Raj said, “PM Modi is a symbol of modern Ravana, and the way he is building his golden palace, once he enters it, he will see the same golden palace burn.” He added, “Sanjay Raut has said that the Ravana of Delhi must be burned, and the day to burn Delhi’s Ravana is near. PM Modi cannot continue for long, and soon there will be fire in his Lanka.”

The comments come amid other provocative statements by political leaders. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has launched a series of attacks on the Prime Minister, declaring, “Since Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s party came to power, many Raavans have been born. The number of people who speak the truth has decreased. The ideology of Ram has been wiped out. Rahul Gandhi has a torch in his hand, we will burn Delhi’s Raavan.”

Raut’s remarks included calls to “burn Ravana in Delhi,” accusations of electoral malpractice, and suggestions to rename Chor Bazaar as “Modi Bazaar,” triggering political tension ahead of festival celebrations.

BJP reacts

BJP spokesperson Shehzaad Poonawala criticised the Congress statements, saying, “Yesterday, a Congress MLA from Telangana abused Prabhu Ram, and today Udit Raj crosses the line. Muhabbat Ki Dukaan or nafrat ke bhaijaan? Once again Congress crosses the line

This is not the first time the “Modi-Ravana” comparison has emerged. The narrative largely originates from political opponents seeking to critique Modi’s dominance in Indian politics. During the Gujarat elections, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had compared Modi to the many-headed Ravana, emphasising his omnipresent role in BJP campaigns.
