Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Sunday asserted that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list in Bihar is in accordance with the law.

While addressing a press conference in Patna after concluding the two-day review visit to the poll-bound state, CEC Kumar said that revision of voter lists is required before every election, and the process was completed well in advance of the polls.

He also expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the SIR process, noting that all voters actively contributed to ensuring transparency and accuracy in the electoral rolls. He thanked the Booth-level officers (BLOs) who revised the voter lists through SIR.

Highlighting the role of BLOs, he said they played a vital role in the poll body’s successful completion of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state.

“We congratulate the voters of India. Thank you to everyone for the successful SIR process. I appeal to all the voters of Bihar to celebrate this festival of democracy with the same enthusiasm as you celebrate Chhath. Everyone should vote and ensure their participation,” he said.

CEC Kumar further asserted that the assembly polls will be completed before November 22, when the current Assembly’s term ends.

He said the number of voters allotted to each polling station has been capped at 1,200 and added that no voter will be allowed to take their phones into the poll booth.

CEC Kumar’s response came after opposition parties raised their concern over the exercise. Various opposition parties in Bihar have claimed that many eligible citizens were disenfranchised during the roll revision for want of documents. They have also claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will benefit from it as the state machinery will target people opposed to the ruling alliance in the state.

Meanwhile, the EC said the first aim of the SIR is to ensure the participation of all electors and political parties.

The poll body published its final electoral roll, prepared as part of SIR carried out over a period of three months.

The term of the 243-member Bihar assembly ends on November 22. The first phase of elections is likely to be held at the end of October, soon after Chhat.
