A right-wing group halted Miss Rishikesh pageant rehearsal, saying that it was “against Uttarakhand’s culture.” The activists of Rashtriya Hindu Shakti Sangathan outfit on Friday entered the venue and objected to the attire worn by the participants.

As per a report by Indian Express, the event was organised by Lions Club Royal, and its director told the publication that three people entered the venue at around 2 pm and objected to the clothes worn by the participants and asked to shut down the rehearsal.

The organisers also said that this event is being organised as a part of Diwali celebrations, and before this, no objections were raised.

A purported video of the incident is also going viral, and it shows one of the activists in a heated exchange with participants. In the video, the man can be heard saying “clothes that are against the sanskriti (culture) of Uttarakhand”. However, he received a pushback from the participants and coordinators. The participants responded to him and said, “culture cannot be defined through clothes”.

Coordinators also told him that this event is being organised with the consent of the parents of the participants. Watch the video here.
