Toyota has announced the ninth-generation Hilux, marking the first time the pick-up will be offered with a battery electric powertrain. The development was confirmed on Monday.

The new model supports Toyota’s multipath strategy by offering electric, hybrid, diesel and petrol options, depending on regional requirements. A hydrogen fuel cell electric version has also been confirmed for 2028.

Toyota stated that the Hilux will provide a range of powertrains to suit customer needs and local conditions.

Design, features and technology

The new generation moves to a single body style – the Double Cab. The vehicle features a redesigned front end and revised interior layout, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a central multimedia touchscreen. Electric power steering is being introduced for the first time in the Hilux for Western Europe, with hydraulic steering retained in Eastern markets. Toyota has also expanded its T-Mate safety and driver assistance package to include Low Speed Acceleration Suppression, Proactive Driving Assist and an Emergency Driving Stop System. Over-the-air updates will be available for certain features.

Connected services will be accessible through the MyToyota app, enabling fleet managers to monitor data such as fuel levels, charging status and journey history.

Battery electric Hilux to debut in 2025

The Hilux battery electric vehicle (BEV) will be the first in the line-up to enter the market, with roll-out scheduled from December 2025. It uses a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery with eAxles providing permanent all-wheel drive. Toyota’s preliminary data indicates a payload of about 715 kg and a towing capacity of 1,600 kg, with an estimated driving range of around 240 km (WLTP). The BEV continues to use a body-on-frame platform and retains the existing wading depth.

The Hybrid 48V powertrain introduced in the previous generation will continue in the new model and is expected to be the volume seller in Europe. Production begins in spring 2026. The system includes a 48V lithium-ion battery, a motor-generator and a DC-DC converter, supporting the 2.8-litre diesel engine. Payloads of up to one tonne and trailer towing of up to 3,500 kg remain available.

Toyota will also offer diesel and petrol internal combustion engines in Eastern European markets. The 2.8-litre diesel replaces the 2.4-litre unit and is joined by the 2.7-litre petrol engine.

Toyota has confirmed that a hydrogen fuel cell electric Hilux is scheduled for 2028. The company said the introduction aligns with its wider view on hydrogen as part of future mobility and is expected to support the expansion of hydrogen ecosystems and infrastructure in Europe.
