Maruti Suzuki India is targeting sales of around 9 lakh CNG vehicles in FY27, a nearly 30 per cent increase from the previous fiscal, as rising fuel prices following the West Asia conflict continue to drive demand for compressed natural gas-powered vehicles, PTI reported, citing a senior company executive.

The country’s largest carmaker sold 2.2 lakh CNG vehicles in the April-June quarter, up 58 per cent year-on-year, and expects the momentum to continue through the rest of the financial year.

“In the first quarter of this fiscal, we have sold 2.2 lakh units of CNG vehicles across models, which is a growth of 58 per cent over the same quarter last year,” Maruti Suzuki Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales) Partho Banerjee told PTI.

The company sold over 7 lakh CNG vehicles in FY26 and now expects sales to touch around 9 lakh units this fiscal.

SUV demand strengthens CNG growth

Banerjee said demand for CNG vehicles is no longer limited to entry-level hatchbacks and vans, with sport utility vehicles also witnessing strong customer acceptance.

“In case of our SUV Victoris, more than 50 per cent of sales are coming from the variant with underbody CNG,” he said, adding that the company has introduced the same underbody CNG technology in the newly launched Brezza S-CNG.

The new Brezza S-CNG comes with idle start-stop technology and a six-speed manual transmission, offering a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.9 km/kg.

Maruti Suzuki currently offers 15 CNG models, including light commercial vehicles, in the domestic market. CNG vehicles accounted for 42 per cent of the company’s total sales last month, underscoring the growing consumer preference for lower running costs amid elevated fuel prices.
