De De Pyaar De 2 fails to beat first part’s Monday collection

Ajay Devgn’s ‘De De Pyaar De 2’ stumbles on Monday, fails to beat first part’s collection

De De Pyaar De 2’s opening weekend collections lagged behind its predecessor, with Monday’s dip highlighting a softer reception. Despite added star power, the sequel lacked the initial buzz of the 2019 original. This performance sets a challenging path for the film to carve its own box office identity, as hopes of surpassing the first installment fade.

There was a certain curiosity in the trade corridors when De De Pyaar De 2 arrived in cinemas-part nostalgia, part cautious expectation. Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh were returning to familiar ground after the 2019 original which quietly turned into one of that year’s most charming success stories. But if the weekend hinted at a respectable run, Monday drew a sharper line between the two films.Back in 2019, the first De De Pyaar De had shown what a word-of-mouth-driven entertainer looks like in action. It rose day by day Rs 9.11 crore on Friday, Rs 13.39 crore on Saturday, and Rs 14.74 crore on Sunday and then held its own on Monday with a solid Rs 6.19 crore.

‘De De Pyaar De 2’ Review: Ajay Devgn Is Far From Papa-Of-The-Year, R. Madhavan Wins It All

Cut to 2025, the sequel seemed to follow the familiar weekend rhythm but with noticeably softer beats. It opened at Rs 8.75 crore on Friday, found a 40% lift on Saturday with Rs 12.25 crore, and nudged its way up to Rs 13.75 crore on Sunday. The Rs 34.75 crore weekend, while healthy on paper, still sat just a little shy of the first film’s non-premiere weekend. Which is why Monday had become the real test, the moment to see whether the sequel could finally outdo the original on at least one crucial metric.Monday’s collections for De De Pyaar De 2 hit Rs 4.25 crore, a clear shortfall from the first film’s Rs 6.19 crore. And that gap, though not massive, is telling. The year 2025 has been a very mixed bag for sequels where on end was War 2 and Son of Sardaar 2 which didn’t meet the audience expectations but then there was Raid 2 and Housefull 5 which brought in the crowds to the cinema halls. De De Pyaar De 2 came in with extra starpower with R Madhavan, Meezaan Jafri, more Jaaved Jaaferi, even Gautami Kapoor but not the same undercurrent of buzz. The music hadn’t penetrated the pre-release chatter, the promotions lacked urgency. With its Monday dip, the sequel now faces a steeper climb through the weekdays. Ajay Devgn, of course, moves on to a busier slate Indra Kumar’s Dhamaal 4, the much-awaited Drishyam 3, and the revival of Golmaal 5. But for De De Pyaar De 2, the hope of surpassing its predecessor has quietly slipped away, leaving the rest of its run to determine whether it can still craft its own identity at the box office.
