In a landmark verdict on Tuesday, the Supreme Court acquitted Surendra Koli in one of the remaining cases tied to the notorious Nithari killings of 2005-2006 in Noida.
The top court allowed Koli’s curative petition challenging his earlier conviction. His conviction had been upheld by the Supreme Court in February 2011 for the murder of a 15-year-old girl. However, after the Allahabad High Court acquitted him in 12 other cases, Koli returned to the apex court this year seeking relief in the final pending case.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Vikram Nath formally acquitted Koli and set aside his last conviction. “The petitioner is acquitted of the charges. The petitioner shall be released forthwith,” Justice Vikram Nath announced while delivering the verdict.
