Anurag clarifies ‘Bandar’ is not about ‘me too’ after backlash

Amidst backlash, Anurag Kashyap clarifies that Bobby Deol starrer 'Bandar' has nothing to do with the 'me too' movement

Anurag Kashyap whose last film was ‘Nishaanchi’ is already in the news for his upcoming film ‘Bandar’. It stars Bobby Deol and recently saw its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). According to the early reviews of the film after its premiere at TIFF, some have touted it to be a highly provocative movie. Some also have felt that the film is related to the #MeToo movement. Infact, the film has been getting backlash after some people believe the film to be ‘anti Metoo’. Some critics also called the film ‘pro-men’. Amidst all the backlash, Anurag Kashyap has broken silence on it. He said that the film has nothing to do with ‘me too’. He said during a chat with Screen, “It has nothing to do with MeToo. See when a film is about a false rape accusation case, those conversations happen. But MeToo is about power, somebody using a position of power, to do something. This film has nothing to do with that kind of a powerplay, or that kind of sexual angle, so it has nothing to do with MeToo.”Talking more about the film’s script, Kashyap said, “So I didn’t have the time to write the script. And, I was of the opinion it’s a very complex subject, very difficult, but only if Sudip Sharma agrees to write it is only when I’ll direct it. And he fortunately agreed and that’s how it happened.” Meanwhile, this is the first time Anurag has collaborated with Bobby Deol. When asked about casting him, Kashyap had said in an earlier interview with ‘Mid-day’, “The story is of a has-been. Bobby understands what failure means. He has lived through that and come back stronger. That’s why I knew he was perfect for this role.” He had also said that Bobby completely surrendered to his part for the film.
