The newly released video of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) showcases its world-class design, cutting-edge amenities, and breathtaking interiors, offering a first-ever look inside what is set to become India’s next major global aviation hub.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the airport on Wednesday afternoon, marking a significant step toward easing congestion at the existing Mumbai airport and enhancing regional air connectivity.

The video footage reveals the airport’s striking lotus-inspired architecture, spacious terminals, and advanced infrastructure, designed to deliver a seamless travel experience and reflect India’s growing prominence in global aviation.
The inaugural event, scheduled around 3:30 p.m., will also see the Prime Minister launch and dedicate several key infrastructure projects in Mumbai before addressing a public gathering.
Inside The Mega Aviation Project
Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, around 37 km from South Mumbai, NMIA spans 1,160 hectares and is being developed as a greenfield airport under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The first phase, built at a cost of approximately Rs 19,650 crore, includes Terminal 1, which can handle 20 million passengers annually and manage 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo.
The facility also boasts a 3,700-metre runway capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Airbus A380.
Future expansion plans include three additional terminals and a parallel runway, ultimately increasing total passenger capacity to 90 million and cargo handling to 3.25 million metric tonnes per year.
Architecture And Sustainability
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the terminal’s architecture draws inspiration from the lotus flower, symbolising purity and renewal.
The structure features 12 sculptural columns resembling unfolding petals and 17 mega-columns supporting the vast roof canopy — all engineered to withstand seismic activity, strong winds, and heavy loads.
Aligned with India’s sustainability goals, NMIA will house dedicated Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) storage, generate 47 MW of solar power, and deploy electric buses for green ground transport.
It will also be the first airport in India to introduce water taxi connectivity, promoting cleaner mobility to and from the facility.
Seamless Connectivity And Passenger Transit
A key highlight of NMIA is its Automated People Mover (APM) — an internal transit system connecting all four passenger terminals.
A separate landside APM will link terminals with city-side infrastructure, ensuring smooth transfers across the sprawling complex.
The airport will be accessible via multiple transport links, including the Ulwe coastal road, which is expected to be completed within six months, providing direct access to the terminal.
