A shocking case of family violence has come to light from the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh, where a woman allegedly attacked her own daughter after being confronted over her illicit relationship with her son-in-law. The disturbing incident took place in Kasturipuram tribal colony under KVB Puram mandal.

According to police reports, Venkataamma, a widow from the colony, had been in an illicit relationship with her son-in-law, Charan, for the past few years. Charan, an 18-year-old youth, had earlier married Venkataamma’s 15-year-old daughter. The two young individuals were reportedly in love and got married five months ago.
However, after the marriage, Charan allegedly continued his affair with his mother-in-law. Residents say Venkataamma’s husband had died a few years ago, and since then, she had been living with her daughter.
According to locals, the situation escalated on Friday night when Venkataamma was reportedly performing a symbolic ritual with her son-in-law in the presence of her daughter. The teenage girl objected and tried to stop them, leading to a heated confrontation.

The incident caused widespread outrage in the colony. Angry residents caught hold of Venkataamma and Charan, assaulted them, and then handed them over to the police. Locals also performed a symbolic act of “cleansing” before informing authorities, reflecting the community’s anger and disapproval of the relationship.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Charan and Venkataamma were in a relationship for some time. When the daughter grew suspicious and confronted them, the affair was exposed. Reports suggest that Charan had already tied a symbolic wedding thread (thali) to Venkataamma, deepening the scandal.
Furious at her daughter for objecting, Venkataamma allegedly plotted to “remove the obstacle” with Charan. On the night of the attack, they reportedly stuffed cloth into the girl’s mouth to silence her before assaulting her. Neighbours, hearing her muffled cries, rushed to the scene and saved her.
After the assault, Venkataamma and Charan tried to flee the colony and reportedly took shelter at a relative’s house in Buchinaidu Kandriga mandal. However, once their relatives learned what had happened, they refused to shelter them. Police later tracked the duo down and took them into custody.
The shocking revelation has sent ripples through the small tribal colony. Residents described the incident as “disturbing” and said such acts had never occurred in their community before.
Adding to the tensions, another family member, Kalpana — the wife of Charan’s brother — had previously warned him and Venkataamma to end their relationship and live responsibly. Reports suggest that both Charan and Venkataamma had also attacked Kalpana during an earlier confrontation.
Her husband, Bangarayya, later filed a police complaint, stating that his wife was assaulted simply for trying to intervene. Local police have confirmed that both women — the daughter and Kalpana — sustained injuries in separate incidents involving the same accused.
KVB Puram police have registered a case against Venkataamma and Charan for attempted murder and other charges. The investigation is ongoing, and statements from witnesses are being recorded. Police said community members initially tried to mediate the issue and even approached the police station requesting leniency, but once the assault and injuries were confirmed, formal charges were filed.
Both accused are currently under custody, and the medical reports of the injured women are awaited. Police say they are also looking into how an underage marriage between Charan and the girl took place, and whether charges under the POCSO Act apply.
A Case Reflecting Broader Issues
The incident sheds light on multiple social problems — underage marriages, domestic violence, and the breakdown of family structures in rural and tribal areas. Experts say cases like these often go unreported until violence erupts, as community pressure and social stigma prevent victims from seeking help.
While this case has drawn attention because of its shocking details, it also highlights the urgent need for awareness about consent, relationship boundaries, and the legal protection available for minors.
Meanwhile, the survivor, who is in the hospital, has reportedly urged the police to ensure that both accused face strict punishment. Community leaders have also appealed to authorities to conduct awareness programmes in the area about women’s safety and family counselling.
Police officials say they will submit the charge sheet once forensic and medical evidence is complete. The case continues to be under investigation.
