Man United star player linked with Saudi move as Red Devils eye Barca goalkeeper: Report

The new football season has started to gather pace but the planning for the January transfer window has also began at Manchester United, say reports.

Manchester United are being linked with some big transfer moves as the new 2025-26 season gathers steam. United are currently 10th in the English Premier League table with 10 points from seven matches, having defeated Sunderland last weekend. They are already knocked out of the League Cup and Man United have no European football this season, the first time since 2014-15.

United recruiters and manager Ruben Amorim worked closely in the summer to bring in new players who could fit the 3-4-3 system. They spent over £200 million on players like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. But the poor start to the season could see them look for new players in the January transfer window, and also to offload a few to make space for future recruits.

Maguire to join Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia?

The Daily Mail in England has claimed that Manchester United defender Harry Maguire could leave the club in January, as he has been linked with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. Al-Ettifaq from the same league is also interested in the 32-year-old footballer, the report said.

Maguire has a contract till 2026 at Old Trafford and the option to extend it by a year, but he will most likely leave the club either in January or next summer for a Saudi sojourn that will help him land a big pay cheque.

United to sign Ter Stegen?

Meanwhile, Manchester United are also reportedly planning to make an offer for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen in the January transfer window, Diario Sport says. Ter Stegen and Barcelona were involved in a spat at the start of the ongoing season, and the injured footballer has lost the goalkeeper position to Joan García.

Ter Stegen had surgery for back problems in June 2025 and is expected to be back on the field in November, but a lack of chances before the 2026 World Cup at Barcelona could force him to look for a new club.

Man United can be an option for the 33-year-old German goalkeeper, but Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in signing him.

United handed new signing Senne Lammens a debut in a 2-0 win over Sunderland last Saturday, but may be tempted into signing a world-class goalkeeper if Ter Stegen becomes available, as the position between the sticks has been a perennial problem for them.
