In a shocking incident, a gang in Karnataka’s Hospet killed a specially-abled man and staged a fake road accident to fraudulently claim a Rs 5.2 crore insurance policy taken in his name. A woman member of the gang even posed as the victim’s fake wife to get the money.

The case came into the limelight after the victim’s real wife, Sharadamma, filed a police complaint in Vijayanagara district.

The victim, identified as 34-year-old Gangadhar from Jeeraganur village in Kampli taluk, had been living in Hospet. He had been partially paralysed following a stroke three years ago and was unable to use the left side of his body, news agency IANS reported.

Vijayanagara Superintendent of Police S Jahnavi said the case initially appeared to be a hit-and-run when police received a call early on September 28 about a body found on Sandur Road. However, suspicion grew when the victim’s wife said that they did not own a two-wheeler, casting doubt on the accident claim.

“On September 28, we received a call at 5.30 a.m. regarding a hit-and-run case, with a body lying on Sandur Road. I, along with officers, visited the spot, and after due procedures, the body was shifted. Once the identity of the deceased was confirmed, his wife, Sharadamma, a resident of Kaulpet in Hospet town, was called to the police station, where she registered her complaint. Gangadhar did not own a two-wheeler, which raised suspicion regarding the reported hit-and-run case, his wife stated,” the SP said, as quoted by the news agency.

The police further found that the gang had taken out a high-value insurance policy in Gangadhar’s name, listing a fake wife, “Ningamma,” as the nominee. The gang killed Gangadhar and then took his body to the outskirts of the city, where they put it on a two-wheeler and then hit it with a car to stage it like an accident.

Six people, including a woman who claimed to be the deceased’s wife, have been arrested. The accused were identified as Huligemma, who posed as the wife; Krishnappa from Koppal; Ravi and Ajay from Hospet; and Riyaz and Yograj Singh.

The police have also seized the car and moped used to commit the crime.

Police believe the gang has been targeting vulnerable individuals—including the homeless and those with serious illnesses or disabilities—opening bank accounts in their names and then taking out life insurance policies worth Rs 40–50 lakh. Once the insured person died, the gang would have a nominee collect the money, give them a small cut, and keep the rest.

The police have also stated that they are writing to the insurance company regarding the ongoing fraud.

The investigation is ongoing, and the accused gang is being probed for their involvement in similar cases.
