The central government has ordered an inquiry following allegations made by Wintrack Inc, which announced it has halted all import-export operations in India from October 1, citing “relentless harassment” by Chennai Customs officials.

Wintrack Inc, an importer of niche electronic gadgets, healthcare, and lifestyle products, made the announcement on Wednesday via a statement on social media, alleging that customs officials retaliated against the company after it exposed bribery attempts.

“After exposing their bribery practices twice this year, they retaliated, effectively crippling our operations and destroying our business in India,” the company wrote in a post on X. “We deeply thank everyone who has supported us during these difficult times.”

Taking cognisance of the matter, the Finance Ministry on Thursday said that it had directed the Department of Revenue (DoR) to conduct a fair and transparent inquiry.

“A Senior Officer from DoR has been deputed to conduct a detailed factual enquiry, hearing the parties concerned, officials and thoroughly examining all relevant documentary evidence,” the ministry said in a post on X.

The Finance Ministry also reiterated its broader commitment to ensuring transparency and promoting ease of doing business. It pointed to recent reforms such as the introduction of the Taxpayer Charter, faceless customs procedures, and appellate bodies for dispute resolution.

“The matter is being dealt with utmost seriousness, and the Government is committed to taking appropriate and expeditious action in accordance with the law. It is reiterated that the Government is committed to enhancing ease of doing business,” the ministry said.
