It is an important milestone in the 100-year history of the RSS—the Swayamsewaks marching on Raj Path, now known as the Kartavaya Path, during the Republic Day Parade in 1963. This was on the request of then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru after he acknowledged the yeoman efforts put in by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) cadre during the 1962 India-China war. The RSS, too, sees the moment with great pride.

The special memory has now been captured by the government on a special commemorative postage stamp on the ‘100 Years of the RSS’ which will be issued on Wednesday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. A commemorative coin will also be issued by the prime minister which features RSS cadre in their traditional pose before ‘Bharat Mata’—which is also a standard in every RSS event or function. The commemorative coin is of pure silver and Rs 100 denomination. The reverse face of the coin bears the image of Bharat Mata along with three Swayamsevaks saluting the goddess, while the front face bears the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar.

The special stamp also features the relief efforts that the RSS carries out in natural disasters to help people. The programme where the prime minister will be present has been titled ‘Matrabhoomi Ki Sewa Ke Liye Sadev Samarpit’ (RSS is Always Devoted in the service of the motherland).

PM Modi will participate in the centenary celebrations of the RSS as the chief guest on October 1 at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. Apart from releasing the stamp and the coin, he will also address the gathering.

Founded in 1925 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, by Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the RSS was established as a volunteer-based organisation with the goal of fostering cultural awareness, discipline, service, and social responsibility among citizens, the PMO has said in a statement

“RSS is a unique people-nurtured movement for national reconstruction. Its rise has been seen as a response to centuries of foreign rule, with its continuing growth attributed to the emotional resonance of its vision of India’s national glory, rooted in Dharma,” the PMO statement said.

A core emphasis of the Sangh is on patriotism and national character formation, the statement added. “It seeks to instil devotion to the motherland, discipline, self-restraint, courage, and heroism. The Sangh’s ultimate goal is the “Sarvangeena Unnati” (all-round development) of India, to which every Swayamsevak dedicates himself.”

Over the past century, RSS has played a significant role in education, health, social welfare, and disaster relief. RSS volunteers have actively participated in relief and rehabilitation efforts during natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, and cyclones, PMO says. In addition, various affiliated organisations of the RSS have contributed to empowering youth, women, and farmers, promoting public participation, and strengthening local communities, it adds.

The centenary celebrations not only honour the historical achievements of the RSS but also highlight its enduring contributions to India’s cultural journey and its message of national unity, the PMO further said.
