Lucknow Municipal Corporation said owners must show Aadhaar and vaccination proof.

The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) launched a new permit programme requiring cat owners to register their pets by paying Rs 500 per cat. The move aims to ensure that all pet cats in the city are vaccinated against rabies, the civic body said. Failure to obtain the licence will attract a fine of Rs 1,000 and could lead to legal action, with full responsibility placed on the pet owner. The licence will be valid for one year and must be renewed annually.

What Cat Owners Must Do

To apply for a licence, cat owners must bring their Aadhaar card and the cat’s vaccination card. The licence fee is Rs 500 per cat, irrespective of the breed and the licensing process is currently offline. Even those caring for street cats can apply for licences, provided they furnish proof of vaccination and Aadhaar details.

After Dogs, Now Cats

The scheme comes just a month after the Lucknow Municipal Corporation mandated similar licences for pet dogs. Extending the rule to cats was a step to bring all household pets under the ambit of municipal monitoring, the civic body said.

Several Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Ahmedabad, already mandate cat licences under local municipal regulations. Requirements and fees vary, but the objective remains the same: to ensure vaccination compliance and responsible ownership.
