Trump to head ‘board of peace’ for post-war Gaza Strip

Under his 20-point plan for Gaza, US President Donald Trump will head the ‘board of peace’ that will oversee the transitional administration of the strip before the eventual handover to the reformed Palestinian Authority. Former British Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair will also have a key role in the administration.

Under his 20-point plan for the Gaza Strip, US President Donald Trump will head the ‘board of peace’ overseeing the transitional administration of the Palestinian enclave until the eventual handover to the reformed Palestinian Authority (PA).

Trump on Monday released his 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza and rebuild the enclave. The plan seeks to oust Hamas as the strip’s ruler, install a committee of Palestinian technocrats to run a civilian management under the so-called board of peace, and eventually hand over the reins to PA.

Hamas will neither govern Gaza nor carry arms in the post-war Gaza, according to Trump’s proposal.

Even as he has railed against PA for years, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the proposal. Hamas is said to be studying it at the moment.

Trump’s plan to oversee post-war Gaza’s administration

Under Trump’s plan, a temporary transitional committee of apolitical, technocratic Palestinians will take over Gaza’s administration in the immediate future.

The committee will be responsible for delivering the day-to-day running of public services and municipalities and will comprise qualified Palestinians and international experts, as per the plan.

The committee will work under the oversight and supervision of a new international transitional body, the ‘Board of Peace’, which will be headed and chaired by Trump and have other heads of state as members, the plan said.

The committee will include former British Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair and other members will be named soon, the plan said.

This so-called board of piece will set the framework and handle the funding for the redevelopment of Gaza until the administration is handed over to the reformed PA — the internationally-recognised Palestinian administration that partially governs occupied West Bank.

As for reforms, the plan said that the PA would need it undertake measures listed in the Trump’s 2020 proposal in the first term and the Saudi-French framework outlined this year. The intention is to have the kind of PA that can “securely and effectively take back control of Gaza”.

“This body will call on best international standards to create modern and efficient governance that serves the people of Gaza and is conducive to attracting investment,” the plan said.
