PM Modi welcomes Trump’s Gaza plan, calls it ‘viable pathway to long term peace, security’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan for the Gaza Strip. He said it provides a viable pathway to long term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people and the region at large.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan and said it was a step towards reaching long-term peace and security for not just Israelis and Palestinians but the region at large.

“We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region,” said Modi in a post on X.

Trump on Monday released a 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza and rebuild the Palestinian enclave devasted by nearly two years of war between Israel and Hamas. The plan seeks to oust Hamas as the strip’s ruler, install a committee of Palestinian technocrats to run an interim civilian management, and eventually hand over the reins to the reformed Palestinian Authority (PA).

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has accepted Trump’s plan. It is said to be under review with Hamas.

Trump and Netanyahu have pitched the 20-point plan as Hamas’ last chance to reach a negotiated end to the ongoing war.

“If Hamas rejects your plan, Mr President, or if they supposedly accept it and then do everything to counter it, then Israel will finish the job by itself. This can be done the easy way or it can be done the hard way, but it will be done,” said Netanyahu.

Trump said that Israel will have his “full backing” to go after Hamas if the group would reject the proposal.

However, Hamas may not accept Trump’s proposal as the group has previously dubbed several of the proposal’s terms as non-starters. But Trump appears to be hoping this time that the group’s battered state would leave it with no choice other than accepting the proposal.

As per the proposal, Hamas will release all hostages alive or dead; Israel will cease all military activities and withdraw to an agreed upon line; Israel will release 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and another 1,700 detained after the Hamas-led October 7 attack; and aid supplies will be ramped up. The proposal will need Hamas to disarm and Gaza to be demilitarised.
