Shoulder discomfort is one of those problems many people tend to brush off. It often begins as a dull ache while lifting objects, reaching overhead, or even while sleeping. Since the pain seems bearable at first, most people ignore it, hoping it will go away on its own. But in reality, what looks like a minor issue today can develop into a serious condition tomorrow if left unchecked.

Dr Raghu Nagaraj, Director, Department of Orthopedics, Sports Medicine & Robotic Joint Replacement, Kauvery Hospital, Bangalore, shares all you need to know:

When Shoulder Pain Is More Than Just Temporary Discomfort

Mild shoulder soreness from day-to-day strain usually improves with rest. However, if you notice pain that does not subside, keeps recurring, or interferes with daily tasks, it could signal an underlying problem such as a rotator cuff injury.

Warning signs to look out for include:

Constant pain during overhead movements, like reaching for items on a shelf

Noticeable weakness in the arm or shoulder

Difficulty moving the shoulder or restricted motion

Trouble sleeping due to pain

If these symptoms persist, it’s time to seek medical advice. Ignoring them may only worsen the damage.

Rotator Cuff Injuries: Why Timely Care Matters

In some cases, shoulder injuries may cause only mild discomfort. But in more severe cases, such as a rotator cuff tear, the pain can become constant and significantly limit daily activities. If not treated in time, these tears can enlarge, weaken the shoulder further, and eventually lead to complications that might require major surgery.

The severity of the tear determines the course of treatment:

Non-surgical methods include corticosteroid injections for pain management, PRP injections for partial tears, physical therapy to strengthen surrounding muscles, anti-inflammatory drugs, and rest.

Surgery may be necessary for severe or large tears.

Arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure using tiny keyhole incisions around the shoulder joint to repair torn tendons, has made treating rotator cuff tears easier. Post-surgery, the joint is immobilized for a few days to promote recovery, after which movement is gradually resumed.

Neglected rotator cuff tears can lead to fatty atrophy of muscles, where repair has a high failure rate. These patients often require complex procedures like reverse shoulder replacement.

Tendon grafts and surgical implants such as anchors and sutures may be used to restore function in cases of severe tears. Outcomes vary depending on the extent of the tear and adherence to post-op care, but technological advancements in surgical techniques have improved success rates significantly.

The Takeaway

Shoulder pain may seem harmless at first, but ignoring it can come at a cost. Early intervention not only relieves pain but also prevents further damage often avoiding the need for surgery altogether. If discomfort persists or worsens over time, consulting a doctor can make all the difference between a simple recovery and a complex surgical procedure.
