A massive tragedy struck Tamil Nadu’s Karur district on Saturday during a political rally organized by Tamil superstar-turned-politician Vijay Thalapathy. The stampede occurred as over 27,000 people gathered—far exceeding the permitted 10,000—to see the actor at a TVK party event. The chaos led to the deaths of 40 people, including 10 children and 16 women, while 95 others were injured. Disturbing visuals showed scattered shoes and belongings on the streets, and overcrowded hospitals with victims being treated. Vijay expressed deep sorrow on social media, calling the incident “beyond imagination” and stated he was heartbroken. However, he left the venue for Chennai shortly after the stampede, drawing criticism. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the victims, announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured. The Madras High Court is now involved, with hearings scheduled. The state government blamed Vijay’s party for mismanagement and deliberately delaying the rally by six hours to swell the crowd. TVK, on the other hand, accused the DMK government of a political conspiracy and demanded a CBI or SIT probe. The Union Home Ministry has also sought a detailed report from the state government.
