Parliament Chaos: Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Protest Over Student Issues

The second week of Parliament’s Monsoon Session began amid intense disruptions as opposition protests led to adjournment of proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha session started with Speaker Om Birla congratulating Indian athletes for their achievements at the Commonwealth Games before urging members to maintain the dignity and decorum of the House. Speaker Om Birla appealed to MPs to allow Question Hour to function, emphasizing that it is an important mechanism for government accountability. He objected to members bringing placards inside the House and warned that strict action could be taken against those repeatedly disrupting parliamentary proceedings. However, opposition members continued demanding immediate discussions on issues related to student protests and alleged police action. They sought debate through adjournment motions, leading to heated exchanges between the treasury benches and opposition parties. Following continuous sloganeering and disruption, the Lok Sabha was adjourned until noon. In the Rajya Sabha, opposition leaders also pressed for an urgent discussion, arguing that issues involving students and alleged violence required immediate attention. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge referred to provisions allowing discussion in exceptional circumstances, calling the matter serious enough for immediate debate. The Chair, however, maintained that proceedings must follow parliamentary rules and that such discussions require proper procedure and consensus. The government and opposition remained locked in a standoff as both Houses witnessed repeated interruptions. While the ruling side insisted that parliamentary business should continue normally, the opposition maintained that accountability on student-related issues must be addressed first. The ongoing session is expected to see further political confrontation as parties continue their respective demands.
