Torrential rain and water discharge from the reservoirs prompted severe floods in several parts of Karnataka. After the massive water discharges from upstream reservoirs and barrages in Maharashtra, including Ujani and Sina, several districts lying in the Bhima river basin are inundated due to floods.

Districts like Kalaburagi, Yadgir, and Bidar are worst-hit. Over 8,000 people from affected areas in Kalaburagi and Yadgir are relocated to designated gruel centres for safety.

The swollen Bhima and Manjra rivers continue to affect several villages.

The surge in water level disrupted the normalcy and severely damaged the infrastructure. Vehicular traffic on National Highway 50 was halted for a second consecutive day due to the submergence of bridges across the Bhima river near Kattisangavi and Khani villages. Thousands of vehicles were left stranded due to the blockade.

Similarly, the closure of National Highway 150 near Yadgir, as well as the Yadgir-Shahapur road, has cut off at least 12 villages and diverted traffic to interior routes.

Rescue Operations Underway

Rescue operations are underway, with personnel from the SDRF and Fire and Emergency Services successfully rescuing hundreds of villagers from severely inundated areas like Mandarwad, Kobal, and Kadaburu, the latter of which is reported to be completely submerged.

The escalating flood conditions have begun to spread, with the swollen Bhima feeding into the Krishna river and creating a flood-like situation in Raichur, where the Gurjapur bridge-cum-barrage has gone under.

Several agricultural lands in Bidar district have suffered extensive damage, with vast tracts of standing crops like soybean, tur, and urad being ruined by the unrelenting rain and floods.

Bidar District Minister Eshwar Khandre met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and requested an aerial inspection of the flood-affected areas and announced a special financial package for farmer compensation and infrastructure restoration.

As per the official update, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will visit Kalaburagi district tomorrow, on September 30. He will assess damage caused by floods in the Bhima river basin.

The CM will also hold a meeting with officials in Kalaburagi to review relief measures in flood-hit areas.
