The Madras High Court is likely to hear on Monday, an urgent mention made by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party seeking a suo motu cognisance into the stampede that took place in the Karur district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

The stampede-like situation emerged during a political rally organised and headed by actor Vijay.

According to Live Law, Justice Dhandapani has accepted the urgent motion made by the party’s counsels, and the case is likely to be taken up on Monday at the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court.

The party has alleged that there are some conspiracies in connection with the incident that took place, and is seeking a suo motu probe or a probe by an independent agency.

According to the report, the party, in August this year, had moved a petition before the High Court, seeking directions to the Director General of Police to instruct all his subordinate officers to grant permissions for conducting political campaigns by the party, considering their representations in a fair, uniform, and non-discriminatory manner within a time frame fixed by the court.

When the matter was taken up, and the court raised concerns over accountability if an untoward incident takes place during the rallies.

The court had directed the state to frame rules, asking political parties to make a deposit at the time of seeking police permissions, which would then be utilised for payment of compensation in case of damage to public property.

The court had also orally remarked that Vijay, being the head of the party, should ensure that its meetings are conducted in a lawful manner, without any damage.

The court also remarked that Vijay could set an example for others by asking pregnant women and differently abled people not to participate in the meeting, for their own well-being.

THE KARUR TRAGEDY

Meanwhile, the death toll from the stampede-like situation at Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur has risen to 41, after a woman undergoing treatment at a hospital succumbed to her injuries.

Among the deceased are 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys, bringing the total to 41.

The massive crowd at Vijay’s rally on Saturday evening reportedly turned chaotic, triggering panic.

Several attendees fainted and were rushed to nearby hospitals. News agency ANI quotes sources as saying that overcrowding at the venue led to the tragedy.

Later, actor Vijay announced that he will provide financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the bereaved families and Rs 2 lakh to the injured in the unfortunate stampede that took place in Tamil Nadu’s Karur during his rally.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the families of the 39 people who died in the Karur stampede would receive two lakh rupees each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

PM Modi also announced an amount of Rs 50,000 each for the people injured in the tragic incident.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for each person undergoing treatment.
