As of 6.32 a.m. on 29 September, Nashik, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Raigad and Pune were placed on a red alert, signalling the likelihood of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert, one level lower, was issued for Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Bhandara, Ratnagiri, Satara and Sindhudurg, predicting very heavy rain, lightning and squalls throughout the day.

The rest of the state, including Nagpur, Aurangabad, Amravati, Solapur and Kolhapur, remained under a yellow alert, where isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected.

Mumbai reels under continuous rain

The financial capital has faced three consecutive days of heavy rainfall, with intermittent downpours flooding several parts of the city since Saturday night. On Sunday alone, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded more than 50 mm of rainfall in some areas between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The island city logged an average of 47.47 mm during the five-hour period, while the western and eastern suburbs received 53.61 mm and 37.92 mm, respectively.

Neighbouring Thane and Palghar districts have also seen torrential rain. In Bhiwandi taluka of Thane, officials reported that 262 people from 71 families were rescued from flood-hit areas.

Palghar declares school holiday

With Palghar on red alert, District Collector Manik Gursal ordered a holiday for all schools and Anganwadi centres on Monday to ensure the safety of students and staff. Teachers and non-teaching personnel have been instructed to remain on standby for emergency relief operations. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow local advisories as heavy rain is expected to persist until 3 October.

As per reports, the downpour has already claimed five lives in the past 24 hours, with fatalities reported from Ahilyanagar, Nashik, Jalna and Yavatmal. According to officials, over 11,000 people have been evacuated to safer locations, including 7,200 from flood-hit Marathwada. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed district collectors to ensure food, shelter and essential supplies for affected families, while Deputy CM Eknath Shinde confirmed that the Bhatsa Dam gates have been opened to manage excess water.

The IMD predicts that heavy rainfall will continue across Maharashtra until 3 October, particularly in Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur and the Kolhapur ghats, with thunderstorms and winds reaching up to 40 kmph. Authorities remain on high alert as rescue teams work to mitigate flooding and provide relief to affected regions.
